Trouble on Red Elephant Hill Trail
This trail has gotten way harder! It used to be easy/moderate but with all the traffic and erosion on the trails these days, I was surprised to see the trail in this shape. Come along as we attempt to tackle this trail in Jeep Wranglers, a Lexus LX Land Cruiser on 35s and a lifted Ford F-150 on 35s.

    I drove this trail around 2009 in a 2003 4Runner starting from the top. Below there were about 15 cars gathering with the occupants watching me. When I came to the bottom, they told me there was a betting pool if I would fail or make it. Only one guy in that group of 15 betted I would make it. I’ll never run that trail again. The tippy sections are too much for my fear of heights.

  • @danhenninger1
    @danhenninger1 21 день тому

    Best one yet. I’m doing something very similar. You addressed most of my concerns. I need to use a single lifting point so I can “spin” my tent to get it up inside the roof trusses. Once up I’ll lay 2 bars across the rafters and lower it onto them. I want to leave my crossbars attached like you did. Excellent video, thanks so much 👍😉

    I do agree with the rule that those going uphill have the right of way; however some discretion should be applied. If the one going downhill needs to reverse then who is going uphill? It's much easier to go uphill while driving forward. IMHO some give and take should always rule.

    • @Colorado4x4
      @Colorado4x4 Місяць тому

      It is always give and take, and I haven't had many problems with experienced off-roaders. Before I travel downhill, I always look for pull-outs and plan ahead in case if I run into oncoming traffic. Many times, I have been traveling uphill and see downhill traffic and I find a good pullout and wait for them to come down because I can see that they don't have a place to pull out, and they are always gracious and thank me for pulling out. There is no reason to create a train wreck if it can be avoided by anyone. When I am traveling uphill and downhill, I always take note of pull outs that I pass, so I have an idea of where I need to back up to in order to let traffic pass. Often times it is easier for a rig traveling uphill to find a pull-out and just wait for downhill traffic, but the general wheeling public understands that uphill traffic has the right of way and that is Colorado state law.

      @@Colorado4x4 I totally agree, however the key word here is "experienced." I've found in my years the trails more enjoyable after the first wk in September after schools start. One thing I wish you would include is clear mentions on where the bypasses are, and what level of difficulty they are for those people that want to see this trail but aren’t necessarily looking to risk damage/breakage. Hey idk if you'll see this as the video was posted a while ago, I'm looking at this trail as a possible weekend trip or maybe even day trip. OnX is saying its a 7/10, just curious on what rig you're using and how difficult you'd rate it

    • @Colorado4x4
      @Colorado4x4 3 місяці тому

      This trail is definitely a day trip. What are you driving? Trail ratings are extremely subjective and I would not agree at all with that OnX rating, but my 10/10 trails in my mind would be Pritchett Canyon and Sand Hollow stuff. With that said, any high clearance 4WD rig can run this trail with some good driving skills. I’ve seen a lot of stock Tacomas up there and rigs like that. I wouldn’t hesitate to drive a 4Runner or something like that up here. Keep in mind that this trial opens late usually. The last stretch to the lake doesn’t usually melt until July, but we will see what happens this year. We haven’t been getting much snow. - Geoff

    This was our favorite trail. Sometimes didn’t get over until well into August because of snow around the London Mine area. The west side is a bit narrow pass on. Thanks for the memories.

    Amazing video. Hoping to do this trail over the summer, but only have a lifted F150 and a Rivian - both on 34's. And neither want body damage.

      Thanks Reed! The hardest part is that gate keeper section that you see in the video. Just climb the rock like we do in the video and hopefully you won’t slip off. Air down those tires so you have some good traction and just go slow. - Geoff

    I just discovered the channel this week, and man, you really have it together. I've been looking far and wide for videos that break down difficult trails/obstacles step by step, and I found my spot. I'm tired of seeing beauty shots of trucks rolling over obstacles on other channels, just vanity with little instruction. Your channel is like the Master Class version! Keep up the amazing work.

      This is the coolest comment that I have ever received on UA-cam. Thank you so much for your kind words. I got burnt out on doing these trail guide videos and needed to take a little break. I thought they would have done better on UA-cam but oh well. I’m planning on finishing up the last couple episodes for Hell’s Revenge soon. Thanks for your support! - Geoff

      Thanks! All tracks are from Musicbed.com. It is a subscription service for music licensing for videos. The first track is by Tony Anderson and its called The King. The rest of the songs are from a band on there called Utah. - Geoff
